For a strong, practical and modish holdall with more than a nod to the grunge era (did it ever really go away?) it’s back to basics with this cleverly recycled bag made from strong tarpaulin.

This tough material is known for its robustness and brawn, so it is perfect for making a strapping bag with. Two sturdy and comfortable handles and a cotton lining with an inner zip pocket ensure practicality whilst the blanket stitching, frayed edges and lived-in chic look supply the up-to-date style.

It is handmade by workers from a supplier with a large factory employing more than one hundred and fifty people directly, as well as providing employment opportunities for more than a thousand families through cottage industry when their supply demands it. Employees receive a Provident Pension Fund, employee insurance and paid maternity leave.

The company has adopted four children and provides for their education and up-bringing. Their main mission is to preserve centuries’ old tradition of hand-embroidery techniques, many of which derive from the pragmatic art of recycling. For example, women prolonged the use of their clothing and saris by beautifying them or simply stitching threadbare layers together to form new and usable drapery.

This simple-looking homespun bag is designed with this heritage in mind and is a great re-use of a deceptively fabulous and underrated material. The modern look of the design gains its style and efficiency from years of hand-me-down knowhow.

It’s perfect for students, fashionistas and of course a weekend away under canvas.
